Shooting Recommendations

A real-time RAW cinema capture engine on a device that weighs 220g and is ~8mm thick, we think is pretty rad but we're filmmakers so we would.

Like every idea that pushes mobile phones to the New Wave, there are three things to pay attention to:

  1. Battery
    1. How much juice do you have left in the tank.
      1. RECOMMENDATION: Charge your battery when its gets less than 20%
  2. Storage
    1. How much free storage is available?
      1. RECOMMENDATION: Always leave 20% of your total internal space available.
  3. Temperature
    1. What is duration of clips? What is pause between recordings? What is ambient temperature? Are other apps running? Are you charging at the same time?
      1. RECOMMEDNATION: Limit sr RAW recordings to 5 minutes

Performance Indicators

Like all high performance applications, with a combination of low battery, low storage and high heat, overall performance will be decreased. For this reason, we recommend:

  1. Monitoring battery, storage and temperature
  2. Similar to a 400' reel of S35mm film, our shooting recommendation is to keep sr RAW lossless cDNG RAW recordings at 1080 resolution under 5 minutes.

Why? Two reasons really.

  1. Transfer duration. For example, a 10 minute cDNG at 1080 will be approximately 15k frames and approximately ~30GB.
  2. Temperature. When there is too much heat your iPhone will need to cool down some before your next shoot.

Recording Notifications

Although checking for temperature and battery are quite obvious, for some monitoring available storage is a new behavior. sr RAW therefore has two recording notificaitons:

Available Storage Indicator

Before a recording starts, sr RAW checks available storage on your iPhone. If there is less than 20% available, a popup notification will be shown. You should consider offloading sr RAW recordings at this point. As your iPhone reaches 10% available storage remaining, many times this represents insufficient space for sr RAW recordings. This notification cannot be turned off.

Potential Performance Notification (algorithm)

The second notification sr RAW has will show is when a potential "perfect storm" combination of low battery, low available storage or increased temperature are on horizon and a current recording could be impacted. sr RAW automatically stops the recording to limit potential dropped frames. Please take a few minutes to check your battery level, available storage and temperature. Take any necessary action. Start a new recording.
